Who are we?
The Riveters is Michigan’s professional women’s ultimate frisbee team, born from the efforts of the Detroit Mechanix leadership working in tandem with female athletes across the state to promote gender equity in the professional league.
What’s been going on since the inception of the team?
We have held three tryouts, drawing women from the Detroit area, Ann Arbor, Kalamazoo, Midland, and Cincinnati. Since our first tryout, we have formed two leadership teams: one to coordinate the logistics of the Riveters locally and another to partner with other cities to create a structure of professional play for female athletes.
The pro-league coordinators have spoken with representatives from Indianapolis, Nashville, Madison, Chicago, and Pittsburgh. Currently we are working towards establishing the Women’s Professional Ultimate League (WPUL) which would include several streamed games as part of the regular season followed by a postseason championship that can be highlighted at the 2018 WFDF World Ultimate Club Championships or the Triple Crown Tour’s U.S. Open. The goal is to promote spirited competition among participating teams, build visibility for gender equity in ultimate, offer exposure for women’s teams nation-wide, and to develop a coordinated approach that will launch into a sustainable structure.
What are the Riveters’ next steps?
The Riveters have concluded team tryouts and are at the stage of nominating and electing captains. We have been reaching out to other AUDL franchise owners to encourage them to join the gender equity initiative and help their area women to establish a sustainable team and join the Women’s Professional Ultimate League. In case the WPUL cannot be formally established in time for the 2018 season, streamed games have already been scheduled with Indianapolis, Nashville, Raleigh, and Atlanta. We have set the groundwork to creating a sustainable women’s league for the following year – women from all over have expressed their intent on playing professionally, networking contacts between cities have been made, and sponsors are excited and ready.
We can do it.
